Heinz Edelmann (Yellow Submarine) Dies

Heinz Edelman, the German graphic designer who is best known as the art director for The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, has died. He was 75 years old.

Yellow Submarine is a favorite movie of mine, wildly colorful, endlessly witty, always guaranteed to put a big smile on my face. It's also a terrific time capsule of the psychedelic era, perhaps closer to the utopian optimism of 1967's Summer of Love than the turmoil and violence of 1968. And, of course, it has the greatest soundtrack ever - The Beatles.

I loved the art design of Yellow Submarine, its brilliant psychedelic designs and its wonderfully surreal characters. I love the sight of John Lennon walking through the fields, rainbow colors in his wake, as he sings, "All You Need is Love." This is one of the great animation films.
