Miyazaki Riffs #1

Puss in Boots (1969)

Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

One of the most famous images, from one of the most famous action sequences, in Hayao Miyazaki's career. The shot of Lucifer lumbering up the stairs has reappeared in countless homages, tributes, and riffs. Castle of Cagliostro, shown here, pays tribute with predictably humorous results.

Just wanted to say, I'm enjoying your blog, and was wondering if you think you'll be doing a write up about The Ocean Waves sometime? Haven't seen if yet myself, but it's next on my list.

Yes, actually I should write about Ocean Waves/Umi ga Kikoeru ("I Can Hear the Sea"). I have it among my DVD collection, and it's an excellent little picture. Of course, I'm more enamored with the neo-realist Ghibli films - Grave of the Fireflies, Whisper of the Heart, and obviously Omohide Poro Poro - so perhaps that provides an insight. I'll have to write about Umi one of these days.
