What's Opera Doc? (LaserDisc)
Last week, I purchased a Panasonic LX-600 LaserDisc player for Marcee's birthday, and one of the first titles I bought at the Cheapo Uptown was Looney Tunes: Curtain Calls, a single-disc collection of 15 classic cartoons. It's a terrific set that includes "Rabbit of Seville" and "One Froggy Evening," and closes out with Chuck Jones' greatest triumph, "What's Opera, Doc?"
Obviously, if you want to watch Looney Tunes, you can buy the DVD or even Blu-Ray sets. The Curtain Calls LD won't be seen by many people today, which is unfortunate. With a quality SDTV and a quality player, LaserDiscs can shine. And animation remains the format's greatest strength.
There are precious few examples of LD in action on the internet. The most common approach is to connect a player directly to a PC. This, however, results in a watered-down, washed look to the picture. Optimising for the NTSC standard (7.5 IRE) is absolutely necessary for laserdiscs to look their best. I snapped my photos with an iPhone directly in front of the Sony television, and even here, my photos darken the picture just a little. This is an elusive, finicky format to capture in the digital age, but that's part of its charm.
Anyway, back to Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd performing their opera. I snapped a large number of photos, which appear just after the jump.

Bugs Bunny Cartoons on Ghibli Blog? Fat Chance, Thanks to Warner
Remember all those Bugs Bunny and Road Runner cartoons I posted here on Ghibli Blog over a year ago? They're all gone. Every last one of 'em, shut down on Youtube. I grew up watching cartoons on tv everyday for free. Now the conglomerates expect you to pony up $50 for the experience. What a bunch of greedy jerks.
I'd like to say more, but there are pre-school toys present.

Friday was a bit of a slow day for me...oops. I was busy with work and planning my next trip, heh heh. Thankfully, all the Ghibli Freaks came through with some killer comments and info about various topics. I think we deserve some Road Runner cartoons, don't you?
This is the fourth Road Runner cartoon, 1953's Zipping Along. It's wonderful, madcap, hilarious. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I head straight to the Looney Tunes cartoons. Enjoy!

Here is one of my favorite Bugs Bunny vs. Daffy Duck cartoons, "A Star is Bored." This is the one where Daffy gets jealous of Bugs' fame as a movie star, and winds up playing his stunt double. MAKE-UP!!
Hah hah hah hah hah...this is one of my favorites. It's such a joy to have cartoons like these, pure entertainment, pure slapstick comedy, and nothing else. And Looney Tunes did it better than anyone. Enjoy this one on your lunch break when you need to relax.

Tonight's a perfect night for another classic Daffy Duck cartoon, "Hollywood Duck." Yaay!! This is one of my favorites, when Daffy was still, well, daffy. I always preferred him this way, always a little goofier than Bugs Bunny.
I always loved the wisecracking pop culture riffing of these cartoons, even though most of the celebrity cameos went over my head. I still don't know the actor who's working the crane machine. But I got the idea of the joke, and this led to The Simpson's, Mystery Science Theater 3000, and Animaniacs. Good times.

For tonight, I think we'll watch some Road Runner cartoons. I was watching one of the classic Walt Disney Silly Simphonies earlier this evening, The Three Little Pigs, and it was very enjoyable and fun and it's a classic. But I always feel so restless after watching Disney cartoons. I need something a little faster, a little edgier. Cue Wile E. Coyote!
Apparently, this is the third Road Runner cartoon, Zipping Along, from 1953. I really love these early Road Runner cartoons. Some of the best gags appear here, and I'm always laughing with a big silly smile on my face. I just love how these cartoons are so purely focused on that one thing they do so well. These were originally created out of frustration with the worn-out chase cartoon formula, and that pent-up energy shows. This is a viscious, anarchic glee, like smart-alecky teens pulling pranks on the substitute teachers.

I haven't shown any Looney Tunes in a long while, so tonight is the perfect night. Here's Daffy Duck in one of my favorites...Stupor Duck!! Ha hah hah hah hah haaaa....these really are the best cartoons ever made.
A short note to the newcomers to this blog. Even though this is "The Ghibli Blog," I will delve into the oceans of animation whenever it suits me. I think discovering the great animation around the world is essential. My own respect for Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and their peers has only grown because of this.
Also, I just really, really love Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons. Heh heh.

I haven't shown any Looney Tunes cartoons for a while, so it's time to watch some more. And, of course, it has to be Bugs Bunny. This is another cartoon with Marvin the Martian, who is always so much fun. Why is he always trying to blow up the Earth? What's the story on that? Heh heh, not like it matters in these cartoons. The plots are merely setting up the jokes, which is how it should be with comedy. You didn't come to the Fred Astaire picture for the plot - you came to see Fred and Ginger dance.
Hopefully, WB won't have this pulled for a while. Haven't they learned that it's smarter to share everything on YouTube? Where else can I watch cartoons for free? Saturday mornings no longer show 'em. Aren't free Bugs Bunny cartoons written into the Constitution? I'm pretty sure it is. Why else would my grandparents have fought World War II?
You can keep your cheap consumer goods and your plastic and your pollutants. Just give me my free Bugs Bunny cartoons.

Time for another great Bugs Bunny cartoon. This time it's "Haredevil Hare" with Marvin the Martian. I really, really love this one. I'm a great fan of the Chuck Jones cartoons, and this one is so wonderfully funny and so visually creative. Enjoy!

I was going to post "Operation: Rabbit," but I saw this one with Yosemite Sam and couldn't pass it up. This might be my favorite Sam and Bugs cartoon of them all. It's perfectly paced, the jokes are hysterical, and Sam's swearing is perfect.
Bonus points for the BSG fans who spot "frackin'" among the tirades. hah hah hah hah hah hah

After a short hiatus, we're back in action with the evening's Looney Tunes cartoon. "To Hare is Human" (yeah, the cheesy title puns never get old) is the second of several Bugs Bunny cartoons to feature Wile E. Coyote. These are some of my favorites, possibly because Wile E. gets to boast and brag about what a super-genius he is. Hah hah hah hah hah hah hah....ahh, I think I'll get a large bowl of sugary breakfast cereal.
Amazing how you couldn't get up at 7:00 am for school, but you can be wide awake at 6:30 for your Saturday morning cartoons. That's a tradition that the broadcast networks should be forced to bring back. At least two hours of Looney Tunes - uncensored this time! - will be mandatory.
Wasn't this supposed to be a Studio Ghibli blog? I actually had planned to show a number of Ghibli films (honest!), but wouldn't ya know it? YouTube shut them all down. We'll just wait another week or two until they reappear. :P
Update: I thought this was the first Bugs/Wile E. cartoon. It's actually the second. "Operation: Rabbit" was the first. There were five cartoons in all.

Okay, kids, just for kicks, we're going to shake things up. Instead of classic Looney Tunes cartoons, here's a classic from your favorite and mine - Animaniacs! Yaayy! This is the Barney parody, a character who's just a perfect target for cartoon violence.
This is the way American cartoons should be: anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment, no preachy moral lessons, no nutritional value, and lots of gratuitous violence. Now these are role models, kids.

It's another Yosemite Sam sea captain cartoon! Huh, I don't quite remember this one. Either that, or all these Bugs Bunny cartoons are blurred in my mind over the years. They're all so hysterically funny. And there's enough of that rebellious, anti-authoritarian streak to keep me happy. Yeah, this is what turned me into the hippie punk I am today.

Yet more fun with Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam, yaaayy! These are some of my favorite cartoons. They're good enough to make me switch off George Carlin. Is that the gold standard for a good cartoon? Should be. Enjoy.

A little overdue, but technically it's still Saturday night until the sun comes up. And most of you should be stumbling home after the bars and parties just about....now. Now lay off the alcohol, eat some magic brownies, and enjoy some Bugs Bunny cartoons.

It's getting late, and I keep telling myself to post the Looney Tunes cartoon by 10pm, but things always get in the way. In any event, here we go! Here is another one of my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons, with Yosemite Sam, of course. Isn't cartoon violence a wonderful thing? The Great American Export. At least this way it bring joy into your life. The real-life violence royally sucks.
Enjoy your evening Looney Tunes fix! And you guys and gals in France get lots of rest. And bring us back extra leftovers. I could go for some pancakes.

Okay, it's the morning, but I was sleeping through a stomach illness yesterday, and was knocked out cold all night long. I thought about skipping the Bugs Bunny cartoon for the day, but, ehh, that would be mean. You can't go more than a day without Looney Tunes.
