Poster: The Beatles' Yellow Submarine

Poster: The Beatles' Yellow Submarine

Oh, no! Variety is reporting that Robert Zemekis is re-making Yellow Submarine as a CGI motion-capture movie, in the vein of The Polar Express and Beowolf. Noooo! I blame "future" Biff for this.

Hayao Miyazaki proved the supremacy of hand-drawn animation with Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea. And Yellow Submarine is a classic of animation as craft, as art. Any computer-rendered mocap version will be an atrocity.

On a happier note, here's a very large photo of the Yellow Submarine movie poster. 1968 was really a seminal year for animation around the globe, don't you think?

Love to have that poster on the wall!

It's a shame when people cannot have ideas of their own have to copy the classics. I hope the deal falls through than get the green light.

Speaking of horrendous ideas for remakes, check this out:

I was searching through that Ultimate Disney website for info on the new special edition Ghibli DVDs when I came across a list of upcoming Disney films. There was a section of films that are currently in limbo. Here is the one that caught my eye:

"Kiki's Delivery Service - A live action English language adaptation of Eiko Kadani's book series, which was previously brought to the screen in Hayao Miyazaki's popular late-'80s anime film of the same name. Jeff Stockwell (Bridge to Terabithia, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys) is said to be developing a screenplay, but news has been sparse."

Hmm . . .

These vintage Yellow Submarine posters are VERY expensive. I don't know what they'd go for on ebay, but one website I visited priced these at....drum roll, please....$4,500! I'm sure cheaper alternatives must be available.

Yes, I do remember the live Kiki's project, but this was from a decade ago, back when Kiki's Delivery Service was the only Ghibli videotape (yeah, VHS) that Disney had bothered to release. I can't imagine this project is anywhere close to being realized, especially now that John Lasseter is in such a position of influence.

Rest assured that there will be no such Hollywood bastardizations of Miyazaki's work as long as Lasseter-san is in charge. He'd just as soon give up one of his own children.

I shouldn't be, but I'm astounded by this ridiculous and horrific news. Can you imagine Jim Carrey as a Blue Meanie? C'mon, this has to be a joke, or a trial balloon ... it has to be. But reason tells me that its probably true. Beatles = dollars. It's magic!

I can't imagine that John Lennon would allow his legacy to be pimped out on one commercial enterprise after another. Shoe commercials, Rock Band, and this. The Earth shifted off its axis on the day he died.

I have to say I don't get this motion capture animation stuff that Zemekis loves so much. What is the freaking point? If you're going to have actors act out the scenes like that, why don't you just do a live-action movie? Or if you like computer animation, why don't you just have a team of animators ANIMATE it? Pixar and Dreamworks create perfectly expressive characters without motion-capture crap. Why is motion-capture even necessary? Gah, I don't get this. It just seems like using technology for technology's sake. But I could be wrong...
That's my cranky rant.

You'd think. Worst I could do is buy a repro if it came to that.
