GKids Gains US Distribution Rights to Princess Kaguya

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya

Hooray for Zoidberg! GKids announced today that they have acquired full US distribution rights to Isao Takahata's newest film, The Tale of Princess Kaguya. This includes theatrical, non-theatrical, television, and home video rights.

In addition, Studio Ghibli is producing an English-language dubbed soundtrack for the film. The production team of Geoffrey Wexler and Frank Marshall will once again be in charge. This is their third localization production, following Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, and Goro Miyazaki's From Up on Poppy Hill.

Princess Kaguya will be released in theaters this fall, and submitted for Oscar nominations.

Great! I'm confident with Gkids giving a release I may actually get to see it through the Pickford arthouse theater like I did with Up On Poppy Hill. Unfortunately I couldn't see Wind Rises as there was no theater near me willing to show it.

Amazing! This is fantastic news. I had begun to fear it wouldn't be released here at all.

I see this as a mixed bag. GKids did an amazing job with the home video release of "from Up on Poppy Hill" right down to the gorgeous packaging.

What I am less excited about is the company's need to submit for an Oscar nomination which will mean a North American release will probably not happen until May 2015.

Any idea on when Kaguya will see a Japanese blu-ray release? And I wonder if "ocean Waves" will be released in conjunction with this film?
