French film site FilmsActu.com is officially confirming that Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray Disc in France this December.
On a related note, I honestly have no idea why Ponyo has been pushed back to February, 2010 for the UK. That's just baffling, and with home versions available in Japan, France and possibly the USA before it arrives in British theaters...Well, friends, that just has to hurt. You must be feeling burned right about now, and you're all owed a damned good explanation.

Oh yes it has irked me something rotten!!!! Being a huge Ghibli fan in the UK this was terrible news. But hey why wait for the UK release when I can import it on DVD or bluray before it comes out here. In fact I've just ordered the Japanese DVD. Screw the distribution issues!
Did you see that the American DVDs of Laputa, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Totoro have all be discontinued? . . . Only to be replaced by "Special Editions" to be released alongside of the DVD on Ponyo. Interesting!
No word yet on what these special editions are exactly. (Hopefully, the video will be improved on Laputa.)
@chris - Are you sure about this? I checked Amazon and Castle in the Sky is still available, with no word of anything else. Do you have a link or source to direct me? I do think the US DVDs for Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki need to be updated. The Japanese DVDs all sport superior picture quality, and I'm spared the terrible dubs (clearly Disney's worst). I would expect any new release here in the States to use those sources.
Sorry, it was on GhibliWiki. I just assumed you'd had already seen it:
"UltimateDisney.com is reporting that Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro will receive "new Special Edition" releases along side Ponyo. It's unknown what changes are in store for the films and as Blu-ray versions of the films haven't been released in Japan it's likely that they'll be DVD releases."
This is from UltimateDisney:
"We've just learned that it will be accompanied by new Special Editions of Miyazaki's first three films made after the founding of Studio Ghibli: Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro, all of which recently had their original Disney DVDs quietly discontinued. It's not yet clear if the 1980s films will be on Blu-ray as well as DVD."
Totoro is no longer available on Amazon, by the way.
Wow, that's fantastic! I only had enough time to do a quick google search. I was at the Apple store at the Mall of America while waiting for my next bus home.
This is news to me! I did scan through GhibliWiki; maybe my brain just blocked that out? Stupid brain. As always, you're the correspondent that I rely on. I keep forgetting about Ultimate Disney; I should be paying them some visits now.
Thanks for the scoop!
