"Ponyo Was Produced Like This - Hayao Miyazaki's Thinking Process" is the lengthy documentary that chronicles the making of Miyazaki's lastest movie. It was produced by Japanese television network NHK, which has a long working relationship with Ghibli.
We reported earlier on Ponyo's Japanese DVD release in July, and Ponyo's Blu-Ray debut this December. Now retailers are showing that the NHK documentary will also see its Blu-Ray release, not in December, but July.
This is a bit of exciting news for everyone, especially those of us who can't fathom waiting until Christmas to see Ponyo on our flashy big-screen tv's. Ponyo's arrival in US theaters in August means we'll only have to wait a few weeks before heading to our favorite import shops to score the documentary.
Now for the bad news. The Ponyo documentary will not include English subtitles. This is unfortunate, but not very surprising, due to the program's length and its regional appeal. I would love to see this DVD and BR released in the West, which to me seems a no-brainer. But it's not very likely. I've been asking and clamoring for a domestic release of the excellent Mononoke documentary which was released in Japan. Seriously, if it wasn't for the fansub community, nothing would ever get done.
