Am I the only one that got a "Finding Nemo" vibe when looking at the American Ponyo poster? I think part of it had to do with the style of the text. Just for the record, I voted for the French one.

Also speaking of posters/images, here is one I always liked from The Cat Returns.

or the Japanese version

Here is also one from Ocean Waves (Umi ga Kikoeru) that I really like. (which is also gets my vote for Most Underrated Ghibli film)

Ah, yes! That Ocean Waves illustration comes from the Ghibli calendars. It's a recreation of a shot from the film, from the opposite angle, as I'm sure you know. Thanks for sharing that! I'll post it here on the blog.

I'm impressed that the poster for The Cat Returns was so similar to the Japanese one. It's a bit different, but it looks very nice. Didn't I already post the Japanese poster here on the blog? I'll have to check on that.

Thanks for sharing, as always. I'll let Marcee know you voted for the French. Currently, it's a tight race for second place, and the pie is winning.

Ya know, if your movie poster can't beat a piece of pie, something's wrong. :P

Yes, you did post that Cat Returns poster in the past, some time in late 2008 I think. But it's good enough that it deserves to be posted again. (Along with the Kiki's poster where she has her head on the counter)

And yes, I do know of the original shot you speak of. I think you actually posted it here once...*searches*...here it is in fact. (good ol archives)

I also came across this picture of Ocean Waves, which I assume falls into the same category as the the first one I posted.

I love the way Rikako is shown in it.

Yeah, that appears to be the Umi ga Kikoeru illustration from the 1998 calendar. Great find! There used to be a webpage years ago that stocked all the artwork from the first five or six Ghibli calendars. I think it's long gone, however.

This is another reconstruction from the film, the best scene, I think. It's a remarkable climax, and if I recall, Ghibli stole it from one of Yasujiro Ozu's films, in which the camera was static for every scene in the film, except for the climax, which revealed a dramatic sweeping motion.

Umi's climax at the train station was so beautiful, so sweeping. It's one of my favorite scenes from any Ghibli film. I don't believe this is an underrated movie; it just hasn't been seen by enough people. Since it was a tv movie, it was never released outside of Japan, but it deserves its place among the canon.

Umi ga Kikoeru/I Can Hear the Sea/Ocean Waves can be downloaded in the Fansub links, by the way.

I checked the posters, and I did show The Cat Returns some time ago. It's one of my favorite Ghibli movie posters. Thankfully, the new site design allows for tags on all the posts, and I've added the relevant tags to all the posts. So if you want to check out movie posters, just click "posters."
