Studio Ghibli's Next Blu-Ray - Ghibli's Bookshelf (Ghibli no Hondana)

The newest addition to the Ghibli ga Ippai Collection in Japan is Ghibli's Bookshelf, a documentary that originally aired in August, 2010, on NHK's satellite network.  The documentary discusses children's literature and their influence on Studio Ghibli, as well as Hayao Miyazaki's and Isao Takahata's careers, and even touches on the life of Mary Norton, author of "The Borrowers."

The Blu-Ray and DVD also includes a 40-minute interview with Hayao Miyazaki.  A small book will be included in the First Edition run, "mini-library of 50 books boy Iwanami / Miyazaki Susumu election" (9 × 6.5cm, 136 pages).

Ghibli's Bookshelf will be released on June 3, and retail for  6.090 Yen (BD) and 3,990 (DVD).  You can watch the official trailer at Ghibli's website here.

Well, that's somewhat disappointing. Sure, I'm all for learning more about the careers of Miyazaki and Takahata, but I'm not interested much in this whole "children literature" look the movie's about.

I was at least hoping for Kiki's Delivery Service to be next, but meh. Hopefully there will be another Ghibli blu-ray coming this year besides this one.

At Studio Ghibli in Japan, there are many more DVDs and Blu-Rays beside their feature films. There are a number of documentary series like Ghibli's Bookshelf, Yasuo Otsuka's Joy in Motion, and Isao Takahata's The Story of Yanagawa Waterways. There are also home video releases featuring the Ghibli staff, like the Joe Hisaishi concert, the Kazuo Oga art exhibition, and Iblard Jikan. And let us not forget the many foreign animated films on the Ghibli Museum label from all around the world.

Perhaps I should chronicle all of the Ghibli DVDs and BDs in future posts...

Currently, four Ghibli features are on BD in Japan: Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbors the Yamadas, and Ponyo. Castle of Cagliostro and Jarinko Chie are also available on BD (by other publishers, and without subtitles). Arrietty will be released this summer, and by that time Ghibli should make an announcement for the next round of films on Blu-Ray for Christmas.

And if you'd like to see the list of the 50 children's titles that made Miyazaki's list for this documentary, we have a page:
