Beethoven String Quartet, Op.130 - The Orford String Quartet LP

Happy Birthday! Cake and ice cream for everyone! I turn 37 years old today, and for the occasion I'd like to share one of my favorite classical records. This is Canada's Orford String Quartet performing Beethoven's String Quartet No.13, Op.130. The LP comes from the Canadian Broadcasting Company, and was recorded in December, 1976.

I recorded this album to my PC ("needle drop") using Audacity at 24-bit/96kHz, then uploaded to Youtube. Here is what my stereo system looks like:

Sony PX-X5 direct drive turntable
Ortofon 2M Blue phono cartridge
Harmon/Kardon 330c stereo receiver
Musical Fidelity V-LPS phono preamp w/ Radio Shack PSU

You have no idea how much of a pain it's been to put this together. The new Youtube redesign is missing many crucial features, like embedding playlists, and finding the page for this custom player was nothing short of a miracle. This is going to make videos so much easier...I hope. Enjoy.

Happy Birthday Daniel!

Ya not a big fan of the Youtube redesigns either. Should have looked closer at what Vimeo is doing.

What do you use to take care of your vinyl?

Taking care of vinyl records is pretty easy. In fact, I'm always amazed at how poorly Baby Boomers treated their LPs. Didn't anybody figure out you're supposed to clean them?

Proper storage is key. I have a large bookshelf that works nicely. A good inner sleeve is also crucial, especially for older albums. I rely on my carbon fiber brush, and always brush before playing.

There are good cleaning solutions, but sometimes a homemade brew works just as well. Usually it's something like vinegar mixed with water. But I forget the exact formula, so don't just run off. But even if you just scrub with a sponge and the kitchen sink, you're making a difference.

Bottom line - "scratchy" records are a myth. Keep them clean.

Daniel!

Your help is needed. As you've probably noticed, BakaBT is down from DDoS. There is a rally to spread the word, verbatim, from this blog: http://storiesofthenewage.blogspot.com/

hope you're spending all this time making viewing notes on the new english release of totoro, rather than lying in hospital with a broken leg or something of the sort!
