Le Roi et l'oiseau, or The King and the Mockingbird, is the famous french animation film created by Paul Grimault. It is a masterpiece of animation, arguably France's finest expression of the art form, and for Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, its influence is incalculable.
That this movie remains almost completely unknown in the United States is downright criminal. It's just baffling. No doubt Le Roi et l'oiseau's long and complicated production history played a major role in this. But what excuse is there today, in the age of DVD? I've often wondered why Criterion Collection hasn't explored animation. This is just about the perfect candidate for their brilliant treatment.
