UK Channel 4 Screening Ghibli Movies

Channel 4 from the UK is showing Studio Ghibli films this month. For those of you living across the ocean, this is a good chance to catch a few great movies. This week, Channel 4 has been showing the dub version, and next week will be given to the subtitled versions. That's a pretty good idea, certainly a lot easier than showing the subtitled movie after the dubbed one, as TCM did during their Ghibli run.

And, yes, I'm aware that we're at the end of the first week of shows. I'm just not a big fan of dubbing - aside from the French-language version of Porco Rosso, and Pixar's dubs for Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. The rest of the dubs range from merely tolerable to downright painful. So let's watch these movies next week the way they were intended, in the original language. It'll give us a chance to bone up on our Japanese. I'm up to the level of Ralph Wiggum; I have a pencil!

Fri, 8/11 - 4:45 pm - Princess Mononoke
Sat, 8/12 - 2:05 am - Grave of the Fireflies
Sat, 8/12 - 5:05 pm - My Neighbor Totoro
Sun, 8/13 - 4:55 pm - Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Mon, 8/14 - 12:45 am - Grave of the Fireflies
Mon, 8/14 - 5:05 pm - Kiki's Delivery Service
Tue, 8/15 - 4:45 pm - Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind
Wed, 8/16 - 4:45 - Porco Rosso
Thu, 8/17 - 5:10 - Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro

Oh, yeah! Nice find. I wrote that short essay on the "On Your Mark" video several years ago, before there was a YouTube. It seems like an eternity ago. Isn't video-on-demand so much better?

Thanks for visiting. We always welcome more friends.

Hey Daniel, I commented you on your IMDB message board for this site a while back and just realized I could comment without having a blog. Here is a copy of my post:

How do you manage to get all this insider stuff on Ghibli like getting Horus, Prince of the Sun and Only Yesterday? I've seen all of Miyazaki's work including On Your Mark, Nandarou, and the Sky Colored Seed, all Takahata's work, Ghiblies 1 & 2, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns, have access to Ocean Waves, am going to be purchasing Panda! Go Panda!, Castle of Cagliostro, Puss in Boots, and Animal Treasure Island. So what else do I need to see all things related to Ghibli? Hope you can help, thanks if you can.

Anyways, I found out about Ghibli through toonami when Spirited Away was coming out. I was like 10 and I thought it looked good so I saw it in theaters. Then I found Castle in the Sky and realized Kiki was Ghibli (which I'd seen before) and then from there I saw everything I could. What about you? I really don't find many people with as big as an interest in Ghibli as me, so I've always wanted to talk to one.

Also, I wanted to ask if you think Horus, Prince of the Sun will ever come to the US?

Could you maybe help me figure out how to download one of your downloads listed on your site step by step? I spent almost 2 hours trying to download Horus and managed to get the file to work only on DivX player, and then I downloaded directvobsub or something that was supposed to make the subtitles show up and it didnt work, so if i could have the programs and everything to be able to watch a subtitled version of Horus, I'd really appreciate it, or if you could link me to some kind of guide or something, it'd help. Hope it won't be hard, but if it is can you just give me a few suggestions like the programs I need for it? Thanks

Hmm. That's not a bad idea. I think I will do a couple how-to posts, to make everything a little easier. It's easy to forget that this can be overwhelming for a lot of people.

Will Horus be seen in the US? Discotek is our best hope. They've already released several Toei films, so they're the go-to people at the moment.

And how did I learn about all of this? I just got nosy, and kept digging and digging until I found everything. Basically, I wasted Friday nights doing research instead of normal activities - like going to bars, drinking, and getting shot down by girls.

On second thought, I think I'll have that drink now.
