Crayons on Paper
One of a series of "coloring book" pieces that aim to fuse abstract expressionism to pop art, Pollack-Meets-Warhol, if you will. I was also greatly inspired by the artwork of Greg Limon (I'm probably mangling his name, my apologies), who displayed a series of children's coloring book drawins at Minneapolis' Walker Art Center in 2000. There's an inherent anarchy, a childlike playfulness, in much 20th Century abstract expressionism - "The Archaic Revival," as Terence McKenna called it. And that's what I was aiming at with my "coloring book" series of sketches.
